State of Art (09/01/18)

about

State of Art’s a song I wrote for season one of the show Bee & PuppyCat. It was supposed to be the theme/credits song but they wound up not doing a sequence so it wasn’t used.

When I was writing State of Art I was thinking about how people can get jaded and stop caring about new things. Whether it’s age or heartbreak or too many disappointments, it’s easy to become cynical and skeptical of new things.

You can get to a place where you feel you’ve seen it all or you think you know where everything new leads before it starts. You know this new relationship will end in heartbreak, you know learning this new technology will end in frustration and disappointment as it gets replaced by a new one.

It’s safer. You won’t get let down as much. But you can become stuck in place and miss out on a lot of the simple joys of life. I mean, that’s what I’ve heard.

Production notes:

I put an earlier version of this song on Soundcloud a year or so ago but I’ve done a lot more work on it. Changes since then:

- Completely re-did the drums
- Re-recorded the acoustic guitar + doubled them
- Added harmony vocals to the chorus
- Added eighth-note shaker in the chorus
- Pitched down the “what’s so wrong” chorus vocals
- Toned down the vocal delay effects in the verses
- Changed lyrics: "replacement" part to original demo's "if your needs are basic" part

lyrics

VERSE
i don't care about the state of art
everything i cared about has fallen apart
don't wanna hear about the new design
i don't mind if i get left behind

i’m not interested in changing my life
not even if it’s at its lowest price
don’t bother tellin me the pros and cons
you got nothing in this world i want

CHORUS
what’s so wrong with living in your parents’ basement
it’s actually kind of cool
and i’m just saying if your needs are basic
i got just the thing for you
just the thing for you

i don’t care we’re getting further apart
i’m not concerned about the strain on my heart
don’t feel worried that i’m wasting my life
don’t need a reason why i’m still even trying

CHORUS
what’s so wrong with living in your parents’ basement
it’s actually kind of cool
and i don’t get why the future’s amazing
with all i’m going through
and i’m just saying if your needs are basic
i got just the thing for you
just the thing for you
